Shipping Minister: Piraeus seeks to become European shipping center

The government’s ambition is to establish Piraeus as a modern shipping center, wth all the necessary infrastructure for all kinds of shipping investments, Shipping and Island Policy Minister Panagiotis Kouroumblis said during a meeting with Greek and foreign representatives of shipping reinsurance brokers (North of England P&I Association, The Standard Club Europe, UK P&I Club and The London P&I Club).

Kouroumblis said that Greece’s biggest advantage was political stability and security, adding that Piraeus was rapidly developing into a modern port, a gateway for Europe both for cargo and passengers. He said that coordinated actions were currently underway to upgrade the ship repair industry and referred to the installation of two ship repair tanks by Cosco in Perama.

Kouroumblis asked P&I Clubs’ representatives for their support in Greece’s effort to seek the commercial base of Clubs in Europe, after completion of a Brexit process. P&I Clubs’ representatives showed interest and willing for partnership and referred to infrastructure and regulatory framework needed to facilitate attracting new companies and expand existing activities and underlined the need for a Greek shipping cluster.

Kouroumblis said this particular initiative was also supported by the Greek Shipowners’ Union and added that Greece has the historical and real right to enter a rally of succeeding London as a European shipping center, since Greece is the most important shipping power in Europe and the world.
