Nielsen survey: Greek consumer confidence index unchanged in Q1

Greek consumers’ optimism was unchanged in the first quarter of 2018, remaining at same levels as in the second half of 2017, Nielsen said in its consumer confidence survey released on Monday.

The consumer confidence index was 61 points in the first three months of the year, slightly up from 60 points in the third and fourth quarter of 2017, while remaining significantly lower than the European index (86 points).

Responding to the survey, 74 pct of Greeks said that the country remained mired in an economic recession, although this percentage eased from 78 pct the previous year, while 75 pct doubted whether Greece would be able to exit the economic crisis in the next 12 months (the second highest percentage among the 64 countries participating in Nielsen’s survey).

Greece remained one of the top scorers among European countries on labour insecurity (three out of 10 Greeks were concerned about losing their job), followed by concern over the economy (27 pct) and household debt (25 pct). Some 19 pct of Greeks were concerned about the prospect of war (10 pct a European average), while 69 pct of Greeks continued efforts to cut household expenses.
